threatened to create the perfect storm trafficwise anyway. the redskins, dc united, and the nationals were all in action tonight. some fans say they moved their commute times up even earlier in the afternoon in order to avoid the traffic. in the end, fans say the triple threat was not as bad as they thought it would be. hurricane bill downgraded, the storm now a cat 1 as it continues its march north. huge swells from hurricane bill are causing extremely dangerous surf and life-threatening rip currents off the east coast tonight. including our area. coast guard had to be called to rescue a boat near ocean city, for instance. and rescuers arrived there just in time. the boat was sinking, and there weren't enough life jackets on board. and similar scenes up and down the east coast as beach- goers brace for hurricane bill. despite beach closings and dangerous current warnings, many diehards spend the day at the beach. fox meteorologist dominica davis has more. >> reporter: with dangerous

swells and rip current, a weakening hurricane bill moving up the west coast. officials warning beach-goers to be careful of large waves battering the shore. >> the concern is that the riptides are strong. there's a strong undertow. basically the waves are only going to get worse as the hurricane gets closer. >> reporter: from north carolina to new york, swimmers and surfers take advantage of the waves. >> you don't see this area this big of that size -- when you do you got to enjoy it. that's why we're out here late. >> kind of a silver lining on a black cloud. >> reporter: the big surf is too much for some, creating a dangerous reality for swimmers. >> we've had a half dozen rescues. >> reporter: many coastal families enjoying what's left of the summer but keeping a close eye on their children. >> i just stay within reason. keep the kids within the line of safety here. >> reporter: on the island of bermuda -- those taking an island vacation thankful the storm wasn't worse. >> it veered between us and the

u.s. we were very fortunate. >> reporter: on martha's vineyard all is calm. the white house is tracking the storm closely because the obamas are scheduled to begin a vacation here is on sunday. hurricane bill's expected to pass just to the east of the cape and the islands, but officials still warn residents that they have be on guard. in new york, i'm meteorologist dominica davis, fox news. as you heard, beaches all along the east coast were impacted. in our area, ocean city anderahoboth beaches were closed to swimmers. bethany remained open most of the day. cash for clunkers is coming to an end. while there is no end in sight to a massive wildfire overseas. we're every did where's at 11:00 tonight. time is running out to in on that clunker. th clunker program expires monday night at 8:00 p.m. some auto dealers are increasing staff for the last weekend while some cut off clunker sales today to make sure paperwork gets done in time. the obama administration calls it a success, but dealers say the rebate reimbursements have been slow. three weeks after a gunman

opened fire in a pittsburgh fitness club, the gym is set to open its doors once again. members of the l.a. fitness center near pittsburgh are lining up for the reopening on monday. three women were killed an nine others were injured before the shooter took his own life. hospitals, homes, and campsite are being evacuated in greece as wildfires tear through the country. greek officials declared a state of emergency saturday. over 300 firefighters and soldiers are battling dozens of blazes by air and by ground. will? here's one that will have you talking athe water cooler. when paramedic susan odom taught super to police officers she never thought her husband who is a police officer would use it to save her life. last week officer arthur odom responded to a 911 call at his own house. turns out his wife was choking. when she dialed 911 she couldn't talk and began banging the floor make noise. her husband quickly arrived and performed the heimlich and just in time. >> found her down on the floor.

a lot of rain out there today. you know what, it wasn't because of bill. we western getting the outer bands wrapping around that hurricane. you can see some of the outer bands now. and the rain we've had has moved on. there's a couple of light showers, okay. right along the eastern sections of the beltway and the eastern parts of the district, northeast. they're very, very light. little bit more rain down to the south. we'll watch it and see if it tracks up here. may have some of that early tomorrow morning. let me show you what's going on out there now because we do have a slow-moving frontal system. and everything's kind of waiting on this front, and this front is actually waiting on hurricane bill to kind of move on up to the northeast. as it does, and it -- it's getting out of here rapidly,

the front will be slowly moving on off to the east tomorrow afternoon. more scattered showers and some thunderstorms from the front, and along the front and off to the east. i think most of those storm tomorrow will be east of i-95. all of us at least have a chance to get a shower or a thunderstorm tomorrow, okay. not going to be completely dry, but not as wet as today. 74 in the city. look at this beautiful picture a hurricane. it is weakening, and it is slowly getting into some colder water up here. as it happens, it will weaken quite a bit. but it's beginning to move on off to the north and -- to the northeast quite rapidly. 25miles per hour now. and by tomorrow evening at this time, that's going to be way up around nova scotia there and becoming what we call extra tropical or losing its tropical characteristics. mostly clouds tonight, showers, thunderstorms possible but not probable. most of those are weakened and diminished out there this evening. mix of clouds and sun tomorrow.

and welcome back to the show, everybody. the redskins not the only team in action tonight. there was some other nfl preseason action. and we begin with one of the redskins' biggest rivals in the nfc east. the giant taking on the bears. and the home opener for dave cutler, yeah. the much ballyhooed offseason acquisition from denver. and here in the second quarter, going up top is denver -- and he does. makes the great leaping catch right there. bears down the one. and that sets up cutler, play action.
